J.F. Kennedy & the Scrimshaw Renaissance


In a television speech by John F. Kennedy in the 60's, we could see on his desk, an antique whale teeth. This sparked a tremendous boom on such art objects. One remembers again this old engraving technology and refined it.

One engraves today with steel needle and engraving burin. For finest details the “Scrimshaw engraver” uses magnifying glass or microscope.

The predominant used material is mammoth fossil tooth, horn and bone.
